What Is the International Agricultural Worker (IAW) Program?

IAW Healthcare Program

Supporting the health and well-being of international agricultural workers across Brant, Haldimand, and Norfolk.

Supporting Ontario’s Agricultural Workforce

Every year, thousands of international agricultural workers travel to Canada to support the country’s vital agricultural industry. Approximately 20,000 workers arrive in Ontario annually, with more than 6,000 working on farms and in greenhouses throughout the Brant, Haldimand, and Norfolk regions through government-supported programs.

These workers, primarily from Mexico and Caribbean nations, play a crucial role in sustaining Ontario’s agricultural economy.

Health Care Services for International Agricultural Workers

To support their health and well-being, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, through Ontario Health West (formerly HNHB LHIN), provides funding to Grand River Community Health Centre (GRCHC) to operate dedicated primary health care clinics for international agricultural workers.

These services are delivered directly on farms, through mobile clinics in local communities, and virtually when needed.

GRCHC addresses a wide range of health concerns, including:

  • Musculoskeletal injuries and concerns
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Skin conditions
  • Sexual health
  • Vision and eye care concerns

Services also include social work support and health promotion initiatives designed to improve overall health and well-being.

Annual International Agricultural Worker Health Fair

Each spring, Grand River Community Health Centre, alongside many community partners, hosts the International Agricultural Worker Health Fair.

This event welcomes workers from Brantford, Brant, Haldimand-Norfolk, and surrounding communities to enjoy food, prizes, raffles, and opportunities to connect with local health agencies and health care professionals.

The Health Fair provides a welcoming environment where workers can learn about available services, access resources, and build connections within the community.
